Herbert “Coach” Johnson 1934 – 2016 Well known former Fayette and Columbia resident, Herbert Johnson passed away at Katy Manor in Pilot Grove, MO on February 16, 2016. He was 81 years of age. Herbert Richard Johnson, fondly known by his many friends as “Coach Johnson,” was born March 18, 1934 in Chariton, Iowa to Herbert G. and Emily E. (Haysour) Johnson. Herb graduated from Chariton High School and attended Drake University. He married Norma Garrett Deuel on September 16, 1961 in Fulton, MO. Mr. Johnson served his country as a member of the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1956. He worked in insurance claims for a number of years. He was a defensive football coach for Central Methodist College in Fayette from 1972 to 1976. At that time he was also involved with the nationally ranked Central Methodist College Rugby Team. Coach Johnson was recognized for his athletic achievements and he greatly enjoyed his association with former players, students and coaches. Herb is survived by his wife Norma of the home in Pilot Grove, his daughter, Kathy (Dean) Wilkerson of Boonville, three grandchildren, Michael (Jessica) Wilkerson, Emma Rose Johnson and Tessa Johnson Sweet and three great grandchildren, Gabby, Sara and Becca. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Cliff Johnson and two sisters. Honoring Herb’s wishes, there will be a Celebration of Life get-together from 3 to 6 PM on Thursday evening, February 25th, 2016 at Booches; 110 S. Ninth St; Columbia. Private burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Fayette will take place at a later date. Memorials are suggested to “PAWS” or Central Missouri Honor Flight in care of Friemonth-Freese Funeral Service, 174 HWY 5 and 240 N., Fayette, MO 65248.
