Robert L. Miller (83) passed away suddenly at his home in Fayette, MO, Sunday evening, April 22, 2018. Robert Lothair Miller was born on July 28, 1934, in Howard County, MO, the son of H. Eugene and Della (Moyer) Miller. He graduated from Fayette High School in 1953 and spent the next four years on active duty in the U.S. Navy. As a Machinist Mate 2nd Class Petty Officer, he spent three years, three months, and seven days aboard the USS Luzon and the USS Jason repair ships in the Pacific Ocean and around Korea. During his following four years of inactive duty, Bob attended Central Methodist College, where he met Patsy Houts. On December 27, 1958, Bob and Patsy were married in Clinton, MO. They both graduated from Central in May of 1961 and moved to Independence, MO, where Bob began his teaching career. In 1965 he earned his MS in Secondary School Administration from Central Missouri State University (UCM). After eight years, Bob was promoted to Vice Principal at Palmer Junior High (President Harry S. Truman’s old high school building). Students and Staff were often greeted by the President on his daily walks around the block. Later, Bob became Vice Principal for William Chirsman High School and was in charge of the staff and students of the special education department. He retired in 1994 but continued to teach part time for a total of 38 year in the Independence School District. Bob had a natural gift for working with students and staff in areas of discipline, advice and encouragement. He made a positive impact in many people’s lives during his lifetime. Bob was member and former Deacon at Fayette’s First Baptist Church; he was a member of the Korean War Veteran’s Association; a Life Member of American Legion Post #0340 in Sugar Creek, MO; recognized as a 37-year member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals; and a 30-year member of Phi Delta Kappa National Education Fraternity. Bob will be greatly missed by the love of his life, for almost 60 years, Patsy, of the home; son, James (Michelle) Miller of Nixa, MO; two granddaughters, Katherine and Kayleigh; sister, Nancy (Rick) Grier; Miller and Moyer cousins; sister-in-law, Ruthie (Jim) Steele, and their family in Northwest Missouri. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his daughter Linda Ragene Miller. A funeral service will be held in Bob’s honor, 11 AM, Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Fayette, MO, with Pastor James Briggs officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Burial will follow the funeral at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Fayette. Memorial contributions are suggested to Fayette’s First Baptist Church. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Friemonth-Freese Funeral Service of Fayette.
