Former Glasgow, MO resident, Elsie Monnig, 101, passed away November 14, 2021 at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia, MO. Elsie Catherine Monnig was born September 24, 1920 in Aholt, MO, a daughter to Joseph and Lena (Kuebler) Hackman. Elsie graduated 8th grade from Aholt and was a devout Catholic her entire life. Elsie worked a number of years at Safeway stores in Richmond and Marshall, MO before her marriage to Staff Sergeant Leonard Monnig on December 29, 1943. After marriage, Elsie traveled with Leonard while he was in the service and then settled on their farm in Glasgow. Together they enjoyed over 70 years of marriage until Leonard’s passing on June 28, 2013. Elsie stayed busy as a homemaker and raising her two sons, Leonard “Butch” and Dan. She later worked as a cook for 17 years at Glasgow Public School until her retirement. Elsie enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, quilting, gardening and playing cards with her family and friends. Survivors include her two sons, Leonard “Butch” (Linda) Monnig of Moncks Corner, SC and Dan (Patty) Monnig of Boonville, MO; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Annabelle Hackman, Ella Marie Wilson and Shirley Monnig. In addition to her husband and parents, Elsie was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence and Joe Hackman, and six sisters, Francis (Henry) Haskamp, Mary (Ted) Triessch, Leona (Henry) Nolke), Dorothy Kearnes, Martha (Herb) Lock and Frieda Hackman, who died as an infant. A memorial funeral mass will be 10 AM, Friday, November 19, 2021 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Glasgow, with Fr. Joshua Duncan officiating. Visitation will from 6-7 PM, on Thursday, November 18, at Friemonth-Freese Funeral Home in Glasgow. Inurnment will follow the service at Washington Cemetery. Family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be sent to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, in care of Friemonth-Freese Funeral Service, 112 Market St., Glasgow, MO 65254.
