Salisbury, MO resident, Dorothy Bates, 88, passed away suddenly at her home on March 3, 2022. Dorothy Marie Bates was born July 14, 1933, in Boonville, MO. She was the only child born to the late Leonard and Margaret (Nellesen) Sellmeyer. She attended St. Mary’s School in Glasgow. Dorothy married Ervin Schaefer on October 30, 1950 at St. Mary’s Church in Glasgow. Under this union, they raised four children together, Roger, Cindy, Russell and Darren. Ervin preceded her in death on April 5, 1975. On June 30, 1984, Dorothy was re-married to John Bates. They enjoyed over 20 years together until his passing on August 29, 2014. Dorothy was a seamstress in the textile manufacturing industry, working for BHA for numerous years. She also babysat, and worked for Mattingly’s and the nursing home in Glasgow. Dorothy loved sewing, trips to the boat, tending to her flower garden, and doing puzzles. She also cherished the time she was able to spend with her family, especially her grandchildren. Dorothy will be remembered for her sense of humor, quick wit, and contagious laugh. She’ll be dearly missed by family and friends. Survivors include her four children, Roger (Judy) Schaefer of Columbia, MO, Cindy (Bob) Oser of Glasgow, MO, Russell Schaefer of Henley, MO and Darren (Rita) Schaefer of Belle, MO; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by four step-children and several step-grandchildren. A funeral service honoring Dorothy’s life will be held at 2 PM, Monday, March 7, 2022 at Friemonth-Freese Funeral Home in Glasgow, with Fr. Joshua Duncan officiating. Visitation will be held an hour before the service at the funeral home, starting at 1 PM. Interment will follow the service at Washington Cemetery in Glasgow. Memorial contributions are suggested to Washington Cemetery in care of the funeral home.
