William W. Prewitt, 93, most recently from Lexington, Kentucky, died February 17, 2022 in Ona, West Virginia. Bill, also known as “Sonny”, was born in Irving, Kentucky. After being honorably discharged from the Navy in December 1947, Bill married his high school sweetheart, Clara Joan Wilson and together they raised 7 children until her passing in 1989. Family and friends lovingly referred to Bill as a bit of traveler, never content to stay in one place for too long, and relocating at various times throughout Missouri, Colorado, California, New Mexico, Utah, Virginia and Tennessee. Even with his love of new adventures, Bill’s primary focus was on providing for his large family - working as a long-haul truck driver for most of his working life, moving later into management. Though he seldom enjoyed a day off, he loved playing golf; and spending time with family, neighbors and coworkers, often entertaining them with his storytelling and usually laughing the hardest at his own “Dad” jokes. Those who knew him later in life often referred to him as a gentle, sweet man who was always quick to help another. In 1990, Bill married Val Jean Best, originally from Pennsylvania, who also developed a love of golf; and together they spent many happy years on the golf course before she, too, preceded him in death. Also preceding Bill in death were his sons Danny Prewitt of Las Vegas, NV and Nate Prewitt of Scottsdale, AZ. Surviving Bill are his 2 brothers, Leon Prewitt of Ravenna, KY and Verlon W Prewitt (Lois) of Irving, KY; his five children, Mike Prewitt (Mindy) of Chesapeake, Ohio; Melody Anderson of Green Valley, AZ; Susan Merritt of Savannah, GA; Lydia Prewitt of Tucumcari, NM; Joe Prewitt of Glendale, AZ. Bill is also survived by Val Jean’s daughter, Jan Shaffer (Jeff) of Knox, Pennsylvania; 12 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
