Dr. John Carter Obituary

John Jefferson Carter, beloved husband, father, grandfather, professor, and mentor, passed away on August 17, 2025, at the age of 70.

John was born on April 28, 1955, in Wheaton, Missouri, to Donna Clark and John Carter.  He graduated from Missouri Military Academy in 1973, and went on to earn his B.A. in Political Science from the University of Missouri–Columbia in 1977.  He received his M.A. in Political Science from the University of Central Missouri (then CMSU) in 1978, and his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Missouri–Columbia in 1981.

John met the love of his life, Jerri, in the summer of 1975, while both were working as camp counselors at Camp Galilee in El Dorado Springs, Missouri.  Despite the miles between them, they maintained a close relationship during their college years—John at Mizzou and Jerri at CMSU.  They married in 1978 in Creighton, Missouri, and began their life together in married student housing in Columbia before both accepted teaching positions in Fayette, Missouri.

In 1980, John joined the faculty at Central Methodist University as a professor of Political Science, beginning what would become a remarkable 44-year career. He retired in May 2024, having shaped the lives of generations of students.  Over the course of his tenure, he authored several books, chaired the Social Sciences Division, directed the university’s graduate program, advised pre-law students, and served as a sponsor for academic and social fraternities.  Known for his high standards and deep care for student growth, John was a demanding yet inspirational teacher who challenged his students to think critically and independently.

Beyond the classroom, John was a passionate reader, chess and card player, lifelong follower of politics, and an avid pet lover who enjoyed walking his dogs around the neighborhood, rain or shine.  He loved cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals, Mizzou and CMU athletics, and the Kansas City Chiefs.  He found great joy in dining with friends at Emmett’s, attending his daughter Liz’s many activities, and spending time with his cherished grandsons, Alex and Gus.

John was preceded in death by his mother, Donna Blair (née Clark), and his stepfather, Alfred Blair. He is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Jerri; his daughter, Elizabeth Carter Geist, and her husband Gregory; his grandsons, Alexander and August; his siblings, Laura Blair, Alfred Blair Jr., and Julie Diaz; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service honoring the life of Dr. Carter will be 1:30 PM, Friday, October 17, 2025 at Linn Memorial UMC, with Rev. Bill O’Neal officiating.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Central Methodist University.  Final arrangements are under the direction of Friemonth-Freese Funeral Service of Fayette.  Online condolences may be shared at friemonthfreesefuneralservice.com.

John will be remembered not only for his intellect and dedication to teaching, but for his unwavering loyalty, steadfast support of those he loved, and enduring devotion to his family.  His impact will be felt for generations.
