Well known Glasgow resident, Howard McMillan, age 87, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by loved ones, on September 20, 2023.
Howard Hubert McMillan was born in Glasgow on April 10, 1936. He was one of four sons born to the late Marvin “Mose” and Jessie (Littleton) McMillan. Howard graduated from Glasgow High School with the class of 1955. On May 18, 1957, Howard married the love of his life, Joann Fuemmeler. The couple have enjoyed over 66 years of marriage together. In April of 1956, Howard enlisted in the United States Navy, where he proudly served his country. He was honorably discharged on February 13, 1962. Following his time in the service, Howard began his professional career with KCPL working as a lineman. When he retired from KCPL in 1994, Howard started working in civil service. He was sworn in 1995 as Glasgow’s Mayor, serving for several years. He then was elected as Western District Howard County Commissioner, where he served two terms. Howard was an active member of the American Legion Post 211 and Knights of Columbus. He was also a devout member of St. Mary Catholic Church. In his spare time, Howard enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of the home, Joann McMillan; eight children, Randy (Dortha) McMillan, Debbie Himmelberg, Darrell (Tammie) McMillan, Glenn McMillan, Danny (Tammy) McMillan, Doug (Erica) McMillan, David (Missy) McMillan and Mellissa (Shawn) Frevert; 32 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald, Carl and Norman.
On Friday, September 22, 2023, the Rosary and visitation will be held at Friemonth-Freese Funeral Home in Glasgow, MO. The Rosary begins at 4 PM and visitation will follow from 5-7 PM.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 AM, Saturday, September 23, 2023, at St. Mary Church in Glasgow, with Fr. Francis Doyle officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow the service at Washington Cemetery.
