Katherine Maupin 1928 - 2015 Longtime Fayette resident, Katherine Maupin passed away December 1, 2015 at the Fayette Caring Center. She was 87 years of age. Katherine Rose Maupin was born October 16, 1928, in Marshall, MO to Charlie S. and Jewell M. (Hughes) Welch. Mrs. Maupin graduated from Fayette High School. She was employed as chief clerk for the Howard County ASC office for six years and for MFA Insurance in Columbia. She is probably best remembered, however, for her clerical work in the medical field. From 1955 until the opening of Keller Hospital, she truly "wore many hats" in her work at Lee Hospital on the Fayette Square. She was Records Librarian, transcriptionist, and secretary to five doctors. She also handled patient's insurance and served as receptionist when needed. When the new hospital opened, the physicians from Lee Hospital established the Fayette Medical Clinic in a new building now occupied by Sam's Drug Store. Katherine remained with them, serving as receptionist and secretary as well as processing insurance and Medicare claims. She later became Business Manager of the Clinic and held that position until it became part of the University of Missouri Health System in 1980. She continued her work in the Keller Hospital outpatient clinic of Dr. M. P. Leech and finally moved to a private office where she did Medicare claims until her retirement December of 1990. She served as Registrar of Howard County Vital Statistics for many years and was treasurer of the Fayette RIII School District for five years during the superintendence of William N. Clark. Katherine Welch was united in marriage to Cleve T. "C.T."Maupin on April 2, 1967, at the Fayette First Christian Church where she had been a member since 1948. Katherine was a woman of strong faith and tireless dedication to the work of her church. She loved singing in the choir, especially the old hymns, and had taught nearly every Sunday school class. She was Church Board Secretary for many years, served as Elder, was appointed Church Treasurer serving from 1992 to 2006, and chaired committees for Worship, Christian Education, Property and Outreach. She was President of Ruth Circle and Christian Women's Fellowship and was Treasurer of the Church's Capital Campaign and Endowment Committee. In the greater church, she had served as Secretary of the Area Board of the Disciples of Christ. Mrs. Maupin is survived by three cousins, Lila Lawson of Fayette, Richard Copeland, Jr. of Glasgow and Marie Snell of Fayette. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Funeral services for Katherine Maupin will be held at 1 PM, on Thursday, December 3, 2015 at the Friemonth-Freese Funeral Chapel in Fayette with Rev. Paula Ritchie officiating. Burial will follow at the Fayette City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Fayette First Christian Church.
