Tim Monnig, an accomplished Glasgow, Missouri businessman, record-setting athlete and lifelong lover of poetry, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2026.
Robert Timothy “Tim” Monnig was born January 19, 1946, in Boonville, Missouri, the eldest of four sons born to the late Robert Alvin “Bob” and Mary Ellen (Sullivan) Monnig. Tim was a standout student-athlete at St. Joseph High School in Salisbury, graduating in 1964. During his high school career, he set numerous Missouri basketball scoring records, feats of athleticism that remain in the record books to this day.
While his achievements on the court were legendary, his most significant milestone at St. Joseph was meeting the love of his life, Carol Ann Marek. Tim and Carol were married on June 10, 1967, at St. Mary of the Angels in Wien, Missouri. Carol joined Tim in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where Tim was attending Marquette University. Tim earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism at Marquette in 1968.
Tim’s professional life was defined by both education and finance. He began his career sharing his passion for language and history as a teacher in Salisbury at both St. Joseph and Salisbury high schools. He subsequently spent the majority of his career in the banking industry, beginning a distinguished 33-year tenure at Tri-County Trust Company. Tim worked his way through every facet of the bank, serving as a teller and loan officer, before being named President, a position he held for 22 years. He retired in 2009 while continuing to offer his wisdom as Chairman of the Board of Directors until his passing.
Tim was active in a wide range of civic organizations. He dedicated his time and leadership to the Lion’s Club, Rotary Club, Glasgow Chamber of Commerce and the Lewis Library Board. Later in life, Tim was active with and supported by the Sante Fe Trail group in Boonville, Missouri.
Beyond his professional and civic duties, Tim was a man of quiet reflection, pointed wit and spirited enthusiasm. He was a voracious reader of literature and poetry and could often be found reciting a favorite poem. Tim enjoyed traveling with Carol to many interesting destinations across the U.S. and abroad. Above all, he was an unapologetic sports fan, never missing a chance to cheer on the Mizzou Tigers, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carol Monnig; two children, Scott (Harriet) Monnig of Augusta, GA, and Shannon (Chris) Damron of Glasgow, MO; and six grandchildren who were his greatest pride: Gordon (Alan Rees) Damron, Lydia Damron, Jack (Jordan) Monnig, Will Monnig, Ben Monnig, and Hank Monnig. He also leaves behind his brothers, John (Jan) Monnig of Glasgow, MO, and Ron Monnig of Eagle Rock, MO, and sister-in-law, Natalie Monnig of Glasgow, MO. In addition to his parents, Tim was preceded in death by his brother, Tom “Bear” Monnig.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 am on Saturday, May 2, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Glasgow, with Fr. Joshua Duncan officiating. Visitation will be held at the church two hours prior to the service, beginning at 9:30 am. Burial will follow at Washington Cemetery.
Following the graveside service, family and friends are invited to gather for a meal and a time of fellowship at the Knights of Columbus Hall to continue celebrating Tim’s life.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to St. Mary School or the Lewis Library, c/o Friemonth-Freese Funeral Service, 112 Market St., Glasgow, MO 65254.
