Long time Glasgow resident, Anthony “Tony” Thies, 95, passed away at Glasgow Gardens January 4, 2023. Tony Thies was born November 23, 1927 to Anthony F. and Elizabeth (Thiel) Thies.
In Tony’s early years, he lived in Tipton MO. At age 10, he moved to the family farm, east of Glasgow. He attended Steinmetz School, then Glasgow High School, graduating in 1946. He married Aileen (Fuemmeler) on August 18,1949 at St. Mary’s Church in Glasgow. The couple enjoyed 73 years of marriage, until Aileen’s death in April of 2022. Tony and Aileen worked together on the family farm east of Glasgow for 45 years before moving to town in 1994. The were members of St. Mary Church.
Aside from enjoying farming, Tony was active within the community and beyond. He served on the Special Road District, he was President of Howard County Farm Bureau, served on the State DNR Advisory Board, served as a City Councilman, he was a member of the Glasgow Fire Board, and he sold Real estate. In his spare time, Tony enjoyed restoring vintage vehicles and tractors.
Survivors include his four children, Bob Thies of Tucson, AZ, Flora Emmerich of Glasgow, Jim (Paula) Thies of Boonville, and Dale Thies of Olathe, KS; one brother, Hank Thies of Glasgow; 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great- grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Fred Thies, and a granddaughter, Naomi Thies.
A funeral service honoring Tony’s life will be 11 AM, Saturday, January 7, 2023 at Friemonth-Freese Funeral Chapel in Glasgow, with Fr. Joshua Duncan officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 AM. Burial will follow the service at Washington Cemetery.
